Week 5 Matchups: Who's Set Up to Win
Buffalo and Detroit have been giving up points, San Francisco has not, and the Eagles' London game kicks off at 9:30 AM ET. Week 5 matchups to act on.
By Derek Sallis · October 7, 2026
Four weeks gives every defense a record to read. Week 5 points three offenses at defenses that keep giving up points and sends two more at units that haven't, and two kickoff times matter as much as the matchups.
Thursday night: Tampa Bay at Dallas
Dallas is favored by 8.5 at home against an 0-4 Tampa Bay team that is down Baker Mayfield for three to six weeks. CeeDee Lamb caught 17 passes last Sunday and our board has him at 18.6, with Dak Prescott at 19.5. The Buccaneers' side is harder to trust. Jalon Daniels started last week, and our board lists Easton Stick as the quarterback, so wait for the confirmed starter before setting a Tampa Bay lineup.
Favorable: the Rams' passing game against Buffalo
Buffalo has allowed at least 29 points in three of its four games: 31 to Houston, 31 to Detroit and 29 to New England, where Drake Maye threw three touchdown passes. Matthew Stafford tops our whole board at 25.9, Puka Nacua is at 22.9 and Kyren Williams at 19.7. The game is Monday night, so you'll set your lineup before the injury news is done.
Favorable: Arizona's passing game against Detroit
Detroit gave up 41 to Buffalo in Week 2 and 32 to Carolina in Week 4, when Bryce Young threw for 329 yards. Jacoby Brissett projects at 20.0, Trey McBride at 16.3 and Michael Wilson at 14.1. McBride scored 6.6 last week, which makes this a bounce-back spot more than a surprise.
Favorable: Houston's passing game at Tennessee
Tennessee is 0-4. Nico Collins projects at 18.1 after a 27.3 week, and C.J. Stroud at 16.6.
Unfavorable: Seattle's offense against San Francisco
San Francisco has allowed 7, 13, 30 and 14 points through four games, 16 a game. Jaxon Smith-Njigba projects at 18.6 and Sam Darnold at 16.1, both with a low floor. The same game helps San Francisco's side, because Seattle allowed 33 to Washington and 23 to the Chargers over its last two. Christian McCaffrey projects at 22.6 and Brock Purdy at 20.0.
Unfavorable: New Orleans' offense at Minnesota
Minnesota held Chicago to 3 points and Miami to 10. Tyler Shough projects at 19.5 and Chris Olave at 15.9, and Alvin Kamara sits at 9.2 after a two-touchdown Monday. Justin Jefferson is the open question on the other side. Our board has him Out, Yahoo reports he's hopeful to play, and Thursday's practice report decides it.
Two schedule traps
Eagles at Jaguars is in London and kicks off at 9:30 AM ET, so lineups lock early on a day most people set after breakfast. Philadelphia's backfield is the problem. Saquon Barkley looks unlikely to play and Tank Bigsby is on injured reserve, which leaves Will Shipley. On Sunday night, Ravens at Falcons hinges on Lamar Jackson's ankle, and Bijan Robinson projects at 22.2, and Baltimore may be starting Tyler Huntley.
We'd normally name the receiver-versus-corner matchups here, but coverage assignments don't leak out until Thursday or Friday. The injury report on Friday carries the final word.

FAQ
- Does a good matchup outweigh an injury tag?
- No. A great matchup does nothing for a player who sits, and an uncertain tag like Jackson's or Chase's should override the defense in front of him.
- Why is the London game a lineup trap?
- It kicks off at 9:30 AM ET, hours before the early slate. Anyone who waits for Sunday-morning news to set a Philadelphia or Jacksonville player may find the lineup already locked.
- How much do four games of defensive results tell you?
- Enough to separate the extremes. A defense that has allowed 29 or more in most of its games, like Buffalo, is showing you something, and one that allows 16 a game, like San Francisco, is too.
