Vikings 9, Bears 3: nobody scored, then Chicago lost Williams
By Jordan Vance
Nobody could score, and then the Bears lost their quarterback. Minnesota escaped Soldier Field 9–3 in a rain-soaked defensive struggle, and Chicago's day got worse in the fourth quarter when Caleb Williams scrambled to his left, slid to the ground without being touched, and had to be helped off the field with a hamstring injury. He didn't return.
Three plays later, Chicago's potential game-tying field goal got blocked. Isaiah Rodgers was everywhere for Minnesota's defense all afternoon — he blocked that kick, and earlier in the game he recovered a fumble that D'Andre Swift coughed up at the goal line after Chicago had driven all the way to the 1-yard line to open the third quarter. That fumble is the single biggest reason this game wasn't a Bears win; it erased a near-certain touchdown. Dallas Turner sealed it for good, sacking backup quarterback Tyson Bagent on the final play of the game — his second sack of the day.
Neither offense found the end zone. Aaron Jones carried the load for Minnesota, 23 carries for 105 yards on almost every non-quarterback rushing attempt the Vikings had. Justin Jefferson managed just 3 catches for 55 yards after a two-touchdown opening week — this defense simply didn't let much happen through the air. Carson Wentz started over the still-sidelined Kyler Murray and managed the game rather than winning it himself, going 11-of-20 for 143 yards.
Swift stayed heavily involved for Chicago even after the fumble — 16 carries and 5 catches for 99 total yards — but Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III were the only real bright spots in the passing game once Bagent took over, connecting on a couple of key completions on Chicago's final, unsuccessful drive.
Fantasy winners
Jones' workload (23 of a possible 25 non-quarterback carries) is as clear a bell-cow signal as you'll see all season. Minnesota's defense is legitimately playing at a high level two weeks in, which matters for how you value their upcoming opponents.
Fantasy questions
Williams' hamstring injury is the biggest story out of this game for fantasy purposes — there's no severity update yet, but any quarterback who gets helped off the field is one to watch closely before Week 3 lineups lock. Jefferson's quiet day says more about a tough defensive matchup than his role; don't overreact to one game against a unit playing this well.
