Recap

Buffalo opened Highmark Stadium with fireworks and a beatdown

By Jordan Vance

Buffalo opened Highmark Stadium with fireworks and a beatdown. The Bills' new $2.1 billion home hosted its first regular-season game Thursday night, and the Lions never had an answer — Buffalo won 41–31 in a game that felt more lopsided than the final score suggests. Buffalo finished with 34 first downs and converted 9 of 12 third downs, scoring on all but three drives all night.

A note before the numbers: NextDyne's box score is still showing live-tier stats as of this writing — official numbers get confirmed shortly after the final whistle, so treat anything below as very likely, not locked in yet.

Josh Allen put together the best game of his season already. He threw for 248 yards and three touchdowns, then added 69 yards and two more scores on the ground — 317 total yards and five total touchdowns, good for 40.8 fantasy points. James Cook did his part too, 21 carries for 135 yards and a touchdown, the kind of workload that tells you everything about how in control Buffalo was. Dalton Kincaid caught a touchdown and racked up 95 yards on 7 catches, and Josh Palmer turned a single catch into a 43-yard score.

Detroit's defense is the story that should worry Lions fans most. This is the second straight week they've allowed 30-plus points — New Orleans hung 30 on them in overtime last week, and now Buffalo dropped 41. Whatever's going wrong, it's showing up in back-to-back games now, not just a one-off.

The offense wasn't the problem. Amon-Ra St. Brown had one of his best games as a pro — 9 catches on 13 targets for 142 yards and two touchdowns, good for 30.7 fantasy points. Jared Goff threw for 327 yards and four touchdowns of his own. Jahmyr Gibbs didn't find the end zone on the ground but stayed heavily involved as a receiver, catching a touchdown among his 6 grabs. Sam LaPorta chipped in a touchdown of his own. St. Brown and Gibbs have now scored in the same game 22 times together.

Fantasy winners: Allen just posted a QB1-of-the-week performance in a game that wasn't remotely competitive by the fourth quarter — that's the profile of a player who's must-start every single week right now. Cook's workload with the game in hand says the Bills trust him as the every-down back. St. Brown's night is a reminder that Detroit's offense isn't the issue, even while the defense bleeds points.

Fantasy questions: Detroit's defense allowing 30-plus in back-to-back weeks is worth building into how you value the Lions' upcoming opponents — teams get to game-plan against a defense that's clearly struggling early. Goff's four-touchdown, 327-yard line came in a loss; volume stats in a shootout you're losing don't always repeat, so don't assume this is his new weekly floor.
