Giants Trade for J.J. McCarthy. Here's What It Means for Dynasty.

Quick answer: The Giants are acquiring QB J.J. McCarthy from the Vikings for a 2027 fifth-round pick, per Ian Rapoport, Mike Garafolo, and Adam Schefter. McCarthy was Minnesota's third-string quarterback. Jameis Winston stays the Giants' starter, coach John Harbaugh said after Sunday's 12–7 win over Tennessee. What happened

The Giants needed a second quarterback after Jaxson Dart went down for the season with a knee injury in Week 2. They got one Monday morning. Minnesota gets a 2027 fifth-round pick with no conditions. Depending on how New York finishes, that pick could land inside the top 150.

Reporting also has the Vikings saving more than $4.6 million in cap space and cash. McCarthy, the No. 10 pick in 2024, lost the starting job to Kyler Murray this summer and sat behind Murray and Carson Wentz on the depth chart. For Minnesota, this cleans up a room that had no place for him.

Who McCarthy is

He's 23 and has 10 career starts. He missed his entire rookie year with a torn meniscus, then played 10 games in 2025 and finished QB32 in half-PPR. Two things stand out from that season. He scored about 15% below what his opportunities predicted, so some of the weak production was bad luck. But his accuracy was a real problem: his completion rate ranked 40th of 42 quarterbacks against what his throws should have produced.

He also holds the ball. His time to throw of 3.02 seconds ranked 39th of 42. That habit gets quarterbacks hit, and it's the part of his game the Giants' coaches will have to fix.

What it means for Winston and Dart

Nothing changes for Winston this week. Harbaugh was clear that he remains the starter even with McCarthy on the roster. If Winston struggles or gets hurt, McCarthy is next.

Dart is the long-term answer in New York. He's expected to return for 2027 after his surgery, so McCarthy has no long-term path unless Dart's recovery goes badly. The trade covers this season's risk. It doesn't start a quarterback competition.

Dynasty impact

NextDyne scores McCarthy at 391. Age is the only reason that number isn't zero. The price is close to nothing, which is the point: he costs nothing, and nothing about his situation has improved enough to spend on him. A player who is behind a 32-year-old bridge starter and a healthy Dart in 2027 isn't a stash in most leagues.

The exception is deep Superflex leagues with big benches. There, a free 23-year-old former first-rounder is a fine last roster spot, and he's one Winston injury from real snaps.

Winston's value doesn't move. He's still a streamer for the next 14 games, not a dynasty piece. Dart's dynasty case is unchanged, and if a manager in your league panics about the trade, that's a buying window.

One note on the Vikings side: this leaves Murray as the clear starter with Wentz as the backup. Murray's health is still the swing factor for that offense — we wrote that up after Week 3.
