Biggest Overreactions of Week 3

Four Week 3 takes the box score doesn't back, plus the one matchup call from our preview that actually held up.

Your group chat is already wrong about a few things this morning. Here's where.

"Davante Adams just took over as the Rams' WR1"

Davante Adams caught 7 of 13 targets for 137 yards Sunday, his second big game in a row with Puka Nacua out. That's not a passed torch. Nacua missed every practice this week with a hip and groin injury, and the team hasn't set a return date, so Adams is playing a bigger role because the other guy isn't healthy, not because the coaching staff picked a new WR1.

Enjoy Adams while he's the guy, but don't pay a premium for him assuming this lasts once Nacua's back.

"Jordan Love and Green Bay's passing game are must-starts now"

Jordan Love threw 53 times for 312 yards. He also threw two touchdowns against one interception on that volume, and the Packers lost by three scores. Fifty-three attempts in a loss is what you throw when you're chasing the game, not proof of an offense clicking.

Don't chase this line. Watch what Green Bay does with a lead before trusting the volume.

"Houston's passing offense is broken without Nico Collins"

C.J. Stroud threw 27 times Sunday, one fewer than his season average, with Nico Collins out on a hamstring injury. That's not a new problem. His own profile on this site flagged Houston's low pass volume as a structural issue back in Week 2, tied to a defense-first coaching staff, not to any one receiver.

Hold your existing read on Stroud. One game without Collins doesn't confirm or deny anything the profile didn't already say.

"Baker Mayfield is finished as a fantasy quarterback"

Baker Mayfield stretch before Sunday was rough on its own, six sacks and a 50% completion rate in the game itself. Then he dislocated his thumb and is out five to eleven weeks. An injury isn't a decline. Don't grade his season on a thumb.

What I'd do:shelve him until he's healthy, then judge the play on its own.

The one call that held

Our Week 3 preview flagged Cincinnati's passing game as a plus matchup against a Pittsburgh defense that had just been shut out. Joe Burrow threw for 22.6 points Sunday, even in a loss. That's the matchup read working the way it's supposed to: not every plus matchup wins the game, but this one produced the number we expected.

FAQ

How much does one game of extra volume, like Jordan Love's 53 attempts, actually predict?
Less than it looks like. Check whether the volume came from a lead or a deficit. A team playing from behind throws more by necessity, not because the passing game suddenly improved.
Should an injury to one player, like Nico Collins, change how I view an entire offense?
Only if the offense's structure actually depends on him. Check what the team's overall pass rate and scheme have looked like over several games before blaming one absence for a single quiet outing.
How do I tell an injury-driven decline from a real performance decline?
Look at what happened before the injury. If a player's rough stretch predates the injury, as with Baker Mayfield, treat them as two separate problems rather than one story.
