Jamal Adams' Vikings Run Is Over Before It Started

He signed less than a month ago, found a new position, and got 11 snaps into his Minnesota debut before his knee gave out on a play with no contact at all.

Jamal Adams suffered a season-ending right knee injury in the Vikings' preseason win over the Giants on Saturday, per Ian Rapoport. He went down untouched in coverage, was evaluated in the medical tent, and left the field on a cart. Coach Kevin O'Connell called the initial exam "not good" before Sunday's imaging confirmed the injury will keep him out for 2026.

What happened

Adams signed with Minnesota on July 28, his fifth team in four years, hoping to carve out a role in Brian Flores' defense as a hybrid piece who could line up at safety or linebacker. The Vikings liked what they saw early — he switched his jersey number during camp to reflect a full-time move back to safety, and he was getting first-team reps in the team's three-safety packages. The team's initial depth chart had him as the backup to Jay Ward.

He looked the part in his brief debut, too. Adams logged a tackle for loss on Giants running back Devin Singletary in the first quarter. Then, on the Giants' only touchdown drive of the game, he went down without being touched while dropping into coverage. He didn't return. That was 11 snaps — and the end of his Vikings season.

This is now the fourth serious injury of the back half of Adams' career, following shoulder surgery in 2021, a torn quad in 2022, and a knee issue that ended his 2023 season and his time in Seattle. He played all 17 games for Las Vegas last season — his first full, healthy season since 2018 — which made this signing look like a real bet on a bounce-back year. In those 17 games he posted 28 solo tackles and 14 assists.

Who benefits in Minnesota's secondary

Adams was never a locked-in starter, so this isn't a starter-level IDP opportunity — but it does thin Minnesota's secondary depth. On our latest depth snapshot, Theo Jackson is the listed free safety and Josh Metellus is the strong safety, with Ward behind Metellus. Rookie Jakobe Thomas sits next on the free-safety line, and Tavierre Thomas is in the mix in the nickel. None of those names currently profile as IDP-relevant on their own, and none of this changes who starts for Minnesota. It mainly means the Vikings are thinner if Ward, Metellus, or Jackson misses time later in the season.

Adams himself wasn't on our Top 30 DB board — he'd signed with Minnesota too recently to carry a real projected role, and now he won't get the chance to earn one in 2026.

FAQ

Is Jamal Adams' knee injury confirmed as season-ending?
Yes. Ian Rapoport reported the diagnosis Sunday after imaging, and coach Kevin O'Connell had already flagged the initial exam as bad news the night before.
Does this open up a starting job in Minnesota?
No. Adams was depth and hybrid — the Vikings' first depth chart listed him behind Jay Ward, and our latest snapshot has Theo Jackson and Josh Metellus as the top safeties. His absence mainly affects depth and rotational snaps, not the starting lineup.
Who should IDP players watch in Minnesota's secondary now?
Theo Jackson is already the listed free safety, with rookie Jakobe Thomas next and Tavierre Thomas in the mix in the nickel. None currently carry enough of a projected role to rank on our Top 30 DB board — this is depth thinning, not a new IDP starter.
