Twenty-one of these 30 players are safeties. That's not a coincidence — it's what this scoring format does to the position, and it's worth understanding before you draft off this board.

This closes out the projections leg of our IDP series, following Top 40 DL and Top 40 LB. Same scoring template: 1.5 points per solo tackle, 0.75 per assist, 4 per sack, 5 per interception, plus smaller bonuses for pass deflections, forced fumbles, and tackles for loss.

Read this as a safety board with a few corners mixed in
Of these 30 players, 21 line up at safety and only 6 play primarily at outside cornerback — the rest are nickel or slot defenders. That split isn't random. Tackle volume drives this scoring format more than any other stat, and safeties are on the field for run support and underneath coverage on nearly every snap, which means they rack up solo and assisted tackles at a rate cornerbacks structurally can't match. A shutdown corner who allows almost nothing thrown his way can finish a season with modest raw numbers, even in a great year, simply because quarterbacks stop targeting him.
That's worth knowing if your league scores DL, LB, and DB as one flexible bucket versus separate rosters — a corner-heavy DB group in your league might not score anywhere close to what this board implies, since the format rewards a very specific kind of DB more than the position as a whole. If your league leans on true man-coverage corners, treat this less as "the best defensive backs" and more as "the best DBs under a tackle-first scoring format" — the six who do crack this list did it almost entirely on interceptions and pass deflections, not tackle volume.
The corners who made it did it a different way
Paulson Adebo is the highest-ranked true cornerback here, at 2nd overall, and he gets there almost entirely on coverage stats rather than tackles — his solo-tackle rate trails several safeties ranked well behind him, but his interception and pass-deflection numbers carry the profile. DaRon Bland and Devon Witherspoonfollow the same pattern further down the board. If you're building a corner-specific dynasty strategy under this scoring system, turnover and deflection production is the stat to chase — tackle volume alone won't get a corner into this tier.

- This scoring format rewards tackle volume heavily, and safeties play a run-support role that puts them near the ball far more often than cornerbacks in man coverage. A shutdown corner can have an excellent season with a modest raw stat line simply because opposing quarterbacks avoid throwing his way.
- Should I trust this board if my league scores DB separately from a corner-heavy roster requirement?
- Treat it as a guide to who scores well under tackle-first formats specifically, not a general "best defensive backs" list. If your league requires true outside corners, look at interception and pass-deflection production rather than raw ranking position here.
