LB Tackle Counts Are Up. The Tackles Themselves Are Not the Same Play.
A linebacker in 2025 makes more total tackles than one did in 2015. Look closer and half of what changed isn't volume — it's who else is in on the play.

The quick answer
Starting linebacker tackle production is up modestly since 2015 — combined tackles per game climbed from a 6.00 era average in 2015–18 to 6.31 in 2023–25. But the composition behind that number changed hard. Solo tackles fell from 4.01 a game in 2015 to 3.32 in 2025, while assisted tackles climbed more than 60%, from 2.00 to 3.23. The assisted share of a top linebacker's tackle total went from a third of his production to essentially half. On top of that, snap share sits well above every offensive position and defensive line in this series and is still rising — 86.6% in 2023 up to 90.1% in 2025. The modern top-64 linebacker is close to a true every-down player, making about as many tackles as ever, with more help arriving on each one.
What actually moved, and what didn't
We looked at every starting linebacker season from 2015 through 2025 — inside and outside linebackers together, ranked by pass-rush and run-stop production the same way as defensive line, so a sack-only or tackle-only cut doesn't hide one job. About two per team. Three eras:

Raw stats, not fantasy points. Per-game rates keep 16-game and 17-game seasons comparable. Snap numbers only go back three years (2023–2025).
Total tackle volume climbed steadily across all three eras, and tackles for loss and sacks both recovered in 2023–25 after dipping in 2019–22. On the surface, that reads like a linebacker corps doing modestly more disruptive work than it did mid-decade. It is a real move, but it is the smaller story here.
The tackle a linebacker makes today isn't the tackle he made in 2015
Break combined tackles into solo and assisted, and the picture changes completely.

In 2015, a third of a top linebacker's tackles came with a teammate also getting credit on the play. In 2025, it is nearly half. Solo tackles fell every step of the way — 4.01 down to 3.32 — while assisted tackles climbed more than 60%. Total tackle volume held up and even grew because the assisted number more than covered the solo decline, but the two numbers describe different plays. A solo stop is one defender bringing down the ball carrier alone. An assisted tackle means multiple defenders converged on the same play. That shift, from mostly-solo to nearly-half-assisted, is a bigger mix change than WR's target decline or TE's catch-rate jump.
This data cannot isolate a single cause. More zone-heavy, gang-tackling defensive philosophies league-wide is one explanation. More RPOs and space-creating offensive concepts that naturally draw multiple defenders to the ball is another. A quieter shift in how scorers credit assists is a third possibility this data cannot rule out. What is not in question is the shift itself — it is showing up cleanly across a decade of data, and it matters for anyone valuing a linebacker on raw solo-tackle counts, since that number alone now captures a meaningfully smaller share of his total workload than it used to.
It also matters for scoring. Most IDP leagues pay a solo tackle more than an assist — the common split is 1.5 and 0.75, which is the NextDyne Engine IDP template too. Under that split, 2015's 4.01 solo / 2.00 assist line scores more tackle points than 2025's 3.32 / 3.23 line, even though 2025 made more total tackles. Combined volume went up. The fantasy value of those tackles, in a typical format, did not.
LB is close to a true every-down position
Defensive snap share for these linebackers sits well above every offensive position and defensive line studied so far — 86.6% in 2023, climbing to 88.0% in 2024 and 90.1% in 2025. Compare that to defensive line's 64–68% range in the same three years, or even wide receiver's 78–79%. A top-64 linebacker today is on the field for almost every defensive snap his team plays, and that share keeps climbing rather than holding flat.
Durability backs up the same trend from a different angle. LB games-played improved from the 64–75% range that defined 2015–2020 up into the high-70s and 80s from 2021 on, the same shape found on the defensive line side of this series. Teams are trusting their top linebackers with more snaps and getting more healthy games out of them in return — the every-down role and the durability improvement are moving together, not by coincidence.
One number worth reading carefully: the 8+ sack season column. It ticked up to 17.2% in 2023–25 from roughly 14.5–14.8% in the two prior eras, but that column mostly reflects the handful of pass-rushing OLBs who crack the top 64, not the linebacker group as a whole. Pass-rush volume for this group — median pressures around 7–8 a season, versus DL's 18–23 — is a fraction of what edge rushers produce. Read it as a "which linebackers also rush the passer" signal, not a central measure of the position.
What the sack numbers here rule out
The same top-64 defensive line cut shows 2025 sack rate (0.390/game) had fallen almost back to its 2020 level (0.393), even though the league's overall sacks-per-team-game number sat about 6% above that same 2020 floor. The open question was where the extra sacks were coming from if the top pass-rush tier wasn't producing them.
This top-64 cut doesn't explain the extra sacks either. Linebacker sacks per game in 2025 sit at 0.230, essentially identical to the 2020 mark of 0.235. Looking at every sack in the league, not just these 64, linebackers as a whole — including edge OLBs — produced 22% more sacks over that stretch. Defensive backs barely moved. The extra sacks look like they came from the rest of the linebacker group, not from this top 64, and not from DBs.

Linebacker is the one position in this series where draft slot declines gradually instead of falling off a cliff. First-round picks hit a 100-tackle season 45.2% of the time, second-rounders 33.3%, third-rounders 30.2% — a real gap between Rounds 1 and 2, but almost nothing separating Rounds 2 and 3. Compare that to defensive line, where the entire drop happens in one round, or running back and tight end, where the cliff hits between Rounds 2 and 3. At linebacker, a third-round prospect carries close to the same odds as a second-rounder. Draft slot still matters, but it is a weaker signal here than at those other spots.
What this means if you're building an IDP dynasty roster
Don't value a linebacker on raw solo-tackle totals alone.The position's whole tackle profile has shifted toward assisted stops, and a scoring system or a mental model built around solo counts will systematically undersell linebackers relative to where the position's actual production has moved. Check combined tackles, not just solos, when comparing options — and check how your league weights the two, because that split now moves the ranking more than it used to.
Treat snap share as close to guaranteed for a top-64 linebacker, which makes his health record the bigger swing factor. With snap share this high and still rising, the difference between a strong and a weak LB1 season comes down much more to games played and per-snap production than to playing-time risk the way it might at running back or tight end.
Watch the 8+ sack column for pass-rush upside specifically, not as a linebacker-wide signal. A small subset of blitzing OLBs drives that number. If a league rewards sacks heavily, identifying which linebackers actually rush the passer matters more than treating the position as uniform.
Don't write off a Round 3 linebacker the way you might at other positions. A third-round pick's odds of a real tackle season are nearly identical to a second-rounder's. Late Day 2 linebacker value is a more defensible bet than the same slot at running back, tight end, or defensive line.
