Deshaun Watson Wins the Job. He Starts Week 1 for the Browns.

Deshaun Watson will start Week 1 for the Browns, head coach Todd Monken announced Monday. Watson beat out Shedeur Sanders in a competition that ran the full offseason, through camp, and through both preseason starts. Cleveland opens on the road against the Jaguars on Sept. 13.

"Took in the full body of work over the course of offseason to training camp, to the games, the joint practice, and ultimately felt like to start the season on the road, Deshaun gave us the best chance to move the ball and score points," Monken said.

The call comes two days after Watson threw an interception and got booed at home in Cleveland's preseason loss to the Bills, then called the reaction "disrespectful" afterward. Monken said Monday those comments played no role in the decision. Watson opened his first news conference as the named starter by walking the comments back.

Watson went 11 of 15 for 126 yards in the preseason opener against the Bears. Sanders started the second preseason game and threw for 74 yards on 9-of-11 passing with a touchdown and an interception. Monken called it close, saying Sanders "closed that gap" over the summer but that Watson had the edge going in.

What this does — and doesn't — change

The job is official. The board already had it. We've listed Watson as Cleveland's QB1 on every 2026 depth chart since late July, with Sanders behind him. Naming him the starter does not recut his Dynasty Value Score or his Engine projection.

The Engine already prices a 15-game starter slate: 2,967 passing yards, 17.1 passing touchdowns, and 358 rushing yards — about 14.5 half-PPR points per game, 218 on the season. That's a low-end Superflex start, not a bounce-back to 2020.

His Dynasty Value Score sits at 0. That's the missed seasons talking, not a missed promotion. He sat out all of 2025 after tearing his Achilles in 2024 (two surgeries on that tendon). He played seven games in 2024 and six in 2023 after a throwing shoulder ended that year. No full slate since 2020. Week 1 doesn't invent that sample.

Sanders was already the listed backup. The Engine parks him at fill-in volume — six games, about 1.5 projected half-PPR points per game— and his score is also 0. Hold if you rostered him for Watson's health. This presser did not demote him. Dillon Gabriel stays third on the chart.

A healthy Watson with the ones still matters for Cleveland skill players. Jerry Jeudy is the listed WR1. Quinshon Judkins is the listed RB1.
