Dynasty Mailbag: Week 5

CeeDee Lamb scored 1.9, Bucky Irving ran for 165, Jayden Daniels is back and Lamar Jackson is out for Sunday night. Straight answers before Sunday.

Thursday night gave readers plenty to ask about. Here are the four questions I'd answer first.

"CeeDee Lamb scored 1.9 on Thursday night. Should I worry?"

No, but it's worth watching. CeeDee Lamb caught two of five targets for 9 yards in Tampa Bay's 24-16 win, against an 18.6 projection on our own Week 5 board. Before Thursday he'd drawn 46 targets in four games, a 31.9% share, so five is far below his pace.

The number I'd watch is the one next to him. George Pickens saw 13 targets and scored 23.5. One game doesn't redraw a target tree, but two in a row would, and then I'd want to talk about Lamb's price.

"Bucky Irving ran for 165 yards. Sell high or hold?"

Hold. Bucky Irving scored 30.5 on 21 carries and 165 yards, with a rushing touchdown and a receiving one. Only 12 of those points came from the end zone, and the other 18.5 came from yards and catches, which is the opposite of the three-touchdown, 62-yard days we told you to sell on Tuesday.

Tampa Bay got its first win of the season with an undrafted rookie, Jalon Daniels, throwing 25 times. The offense leans on Irving, and that's a reason to keep him.

"Jayden Daniels is cleared. Is Kaliakmanis dead weight?"

If you added him from Tuesday's waiver list for Superflex, yes. We flagged him on Tuesday, before Daniels was cleared and with Marcus Mariota out, and the new information ends the case. Drop Athan Kaliakmanis unless you're desperate for a third quarterback in a deep league.

Keep Jayden Daniels and watch the elbow. He has now dislocated it twice, so I'd like to see him finish a game before trusting it.

"Lamar Jackson has another ankle sprain. Should I sell?"

Not yet. Jackson hasn't practiced all week, and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport calls it a "rarer type of ankle sprain" that could cost him more than one game. Rapoport also says it isn't considered long-term or surgical, which matters more than the weeks lost.

Selling now means taking an injury discount on the hardest position to replace. If you need a quarterback this month, add insurance, and keep Lamar Jackson for now. Update, Friday afternoon: Baltimore ruled him out for Sunday night, which fits that advice, since a one-game absence is no reason to sell.

FAQ

Is one bad game enough to sell a star receiver?
Almost never. Check the usage first: Lamb's season-long share was 31.9% before Thursday, and that number tells you more than one 9-yard night.
How many touchdowns is too many in a big game?
Count the points they provided. When touchdowns make up most of a score, as with Javonte Williams on Sunday, the line rarely repeats, and when yards and catches make up most of it, as with Irving's, it usually does.
When should I drop a waiver pickup after the starter returns?
Right away, unless the backup has a role of his own. A player who was only added to cover an absence has no job once the starter is back.
