Lions Sign LB Devin White — Low-Cost Depth for a Contending Defense

The Lions just bought linebacker insurance. On Saturday, Detroit agreed to a one-year deal with free-agent LB Devin White, a former fifth-overall pick coming off a full, productive year in Las Vegas. The timing is not subtle: rookie Jimmy Rolder left Friday's practice with a leg injury and is expected to miss time — even if early reports say the injury is not catastrophic.

For dynasty managers in IDP leagues, this is a classic contender move: low-cost veteran volume on a defense that already plays meaningful football in December. For everyone else, it's roster-construction noise — unless you stream team defense narratives.

What White Actually Did in 2025

White, 28, started all 17 games for the Raiders and finished with 169 combined tackles(90 solo, 79 assists) — third among linebackers in our 2025 season file, behind only Jordyn Brooks and Detroit's own Jack Campbell. He added 2.5 sacks, 11 tackles for loss, seven quarterback hits, one interception, three passes defended, and one forced fumble. It was his first full 17-game slate since 2022, and a clear bounce-back after a six-game Houston stint in 2024 (18 combined tackles).

The résumé still has the early-career peak. Tampa took him fifth overall in 2019 out of LSU. He earned All-Pro and Pro Bowl recognition in the Super Bowl window, including a nine-sack 2020. That pedigree matters less for dynasty than the 2025 film: when healthy and every-down, he still finds the ball.

Where He Fits the Lions Room

As of the latest 2026 depth chart we have on file (July 29 — before this signing), Detroit lined up Jack Campbell as MLB1, Malcolm Rodriguez as SLB1 with Rolder at SLB2, and Derrick Barnes as WLB1. White is not on that sheet yet; expect a reshuffle as soon as the next chart lands. Depth rank is not a guaranteed snap share, but the roles are clear: Campbell is the green-dot centerpiece (174 tackles and five sacks in 2025), and White is the veteran who can step into Rolder's developmental snaps and push the second level of the room.

• Immediate job: cover for Rolder while the fourth-round Michigan pick (pick 118) works back from a leg injury.
• Competition job: force Rodriguez, Barnes, and the rest of the depth chart to earn every snap on a defense built to contend.
• IDP job:if White wins an every-down or near-every-down role, the tackle floor travels — especially next to Campbell's already-elite volume environment.

Dynasty IDP: How to Price It

This is a low-cost veteran value play, not a top-five LB re-rank overnight. One-year deals for 28-year-old free agents are designed to be flexible: win the job and get paid again, or cycle off if a rookie is healthy by October.

Practical move in IDP formats that score tackles heavily: grab White where free-agent acquisition cost is cheap (waivers, short taxi holds, late bench). Do not trade real skill-position capital for him until Week 1–3 snap reports confirm starter volume. If he only rotates, he's a bye-week LB2. If he starts next to Campbell on a Lions defense that stays on the field in January, he's one of the quieter high-floor adds of camp.
