Cardinals DT P.J. Mustipher Out for Season — Foot Injury to IR

Training camp just got thinner inside Arizona's defensive line. On Saturday the Cardinals placed defensive lineman P.J. Mustipher on injured reserve with a foot injury from the first padded practice — and the team says he will miss the entire 2026 season. Head coach Mike LaFleur had flagged the foot as something they were still grading for severity; IR is the answer.

This is not a star-player panic. It is an early-camp interior depth loss on a front that was already sorting nose-tackle snaps — and it stacks on top of another season-ending interior hit.

What Mustipher Was in Arizona

Mustipher (DB name: PJ Mustipher), 27, is a Penn State product who earned a roster role after practice-squad time and a strong preseason run. In 2025 he gave the Cardinals rotational interior work: 32 combined tackles (11 solo, 21 assists), one tackle for loss, and one pass defended in 13 games in our season file — zero sacks. That is the profile of a space-eater and short-yardage body, not a weekly IDP dart for sacks.

On the latest 2026 depth chart we have (July 29, before the IR paper), he was listed as LDT2 behind Roy Lopez. Walter Nolen III sat at RDT1 with Andrew Billings at RDT2. Depth rank is not a guaranteed snap share, but the chart matches how the club described him: real contributor, not the green-dot face of the defense.

Why the Interior Depth Chart Just Got Worse

Two notes make this more than a one-name cut:

• Mustipher is done for 2026. Foot injuries that go straight to IR at the start of camp are not “week-to-week” stories. Plan the season without him.
• Kaleb Proctor is already on season-ending IR (meniscus) per the club — another interior body off the board before the preseason even starts.

Arizona filled Mustipher's roster spot by signing defensive lineman Brodric Martin-Rhodes (a former Lions third-rounder with a short multi-team NFL sample). That is standard camp math: keep the 90-man competitive while Lopez, Billings, Nolen, and the rest of the room fight for the 53. The Cardinals also put CB Jaden Davis on IR the same day and signed safety Quinton Newsome — secondary noise for this piece, same camp attrition pattern.

Club writers had already framed Mustipher's roster battle as tough after the signings of Lopez and Billings — three true nose types rarely stick. The injury ends that competition before it could play out in August.

Dynasty / IDP: What to Do

Skill-only leagues: ignore. A rotational defensive tackle on IR does not move your RB/WR board.

IDP leagues: cut or IR-stash only if your rules force a hold and you have the bench. Mustipher was not a priority weekly start on 32 tackles and no sacks; Martin-Rhodes is not an automatic waiver smash either. If you stream Cardinals defensive pieces, watch who actually wins LDT/RDT snaps once pads turn into preseason games — Lopez, Nolen, and Billings are the names still on the chart.

Early-camp IR is ugly for the player and annoying for a depth chart. It is not a dynasty re-rank event. Price the Arizona offense and edge rush the same way you did Friday; treat the interior as one body thinner and move on.
