Aaron Donald Return 'Trending Upward' — What It Means for Dynasty IDP

Aaron Donald's possible return just got its clearest public nudge yet. After Friday's practice, Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters he doesn't expect a decision until the team gets back to Woodland Hills — but if there's an arrow, "it's trending upwards". Los Angeles is finishing the first stretch of camp at Loyola Marymount (last practice there Aug. 7), then heading home. McVay wants any timeline kept private for now; the directional update is the news.

This is still a developing story, not a signing. Donald retired in March 2024 and has been working through what McVay called a strict, regimented process to see how his body responds. For dynasty managers in IDP leagues, the job is to price the scenarios before the headline turns into a roster transaction.

The Garrett Pairing Is the Whole Point

The comeback talk didn't start in a vacuum. It picked up after the Rams traded for Myles Garrettin June — and McVay has said he first looped Donald in when he wanted his opinion on that deal. Garrett, for his part, said this week he won't try to sway Donald, but that if the three-time Defensive Player of the Year comes back, they "can do great things."

The tape numbers explain the excitement. In 2025, Garrett posted 23 sacks in 17 games — a ridiculous edge season — and he's already listed as the Rams' SLB1 on the latest 2026 depth chart (snapshot July 29). Donald's last NFL season was 2023: 8 sacks in 16 games after years as the league's best interior disruptor, including a 20.5-sack peak in 2018. Put even a limited Donald next to that Garrett edge, and you're talking about a front that changes protection rules for everyone else on the board.

Two Scenarios Dynasty Managers Should Price

• Limited role / late arrival: Donald signs after Woodland Hills, works in gradually, and plays a reduced snap share. IDP value is real on a per-snap basis — interior pressures still score — but weekly volume is streaky. Treat him like a high-upside DL2/flex until snap reports prove otherwise.
• Full-season starter path:He clears the process, takes a normal defensive tackle workload beside Poona Ford / Kobie Turner / Braden Fiske, and rushes next to Garrett all year. That's a top-tier DL stash in most IDP formats, especially leagues that reward sacks and tackles for loss. It's also the less likely base case for a 35-year-old coming off two years away.

Right now the depth chart still has no Aaron Donald row — as you'd expect while he's retired. Interior spots are filled (Turner at LDE1, Fiske at RDE1, Ford at NT1). A return would reshuffle that room fast. Until McVay has an actual decision, don't invent snaps that aren't on the sheet.

Dynasty IDP: What Changes If He Plays

For pure skill-position dynasty leagues, this is mostly Super Bowl-favorite roster construction noise — good for Rams team defense narratives, thin for your starting lineup. For IDP, it's different. A Donald return is a defensive value spike with a hard ceiling question: how many snaps does a 35-year-old former wrecking ball actually want?

Practical move before Woodland Hills: if your league allows IR/taxi parking for inactive legends, get ahead of the bidding only if you can afford a missed-cut sunk cost. If he signs and the snap share looks real, Garrett's already-elite sack environment gets even friendlier, and Donald himself becomes one of the highest-leverage midseason IDP adds of the year. If the arrow flattens after camp, you spent a lot of anxiety on a rumor that McVay already told you wouldn't resolve at LMU.
